I recently purchased a 2000 sw2 with 71000 miles that has an odd transmission problem. When i shift it into reverse(automatic trans),it hessitates for several seconds before going into gear?

Reverse is the only gear to do this.

anyone know why ??Edited by: sw2cam

Its a very common issue. Its most often referred to as "reverse slam". Removing the end cover of the transmission and retorquing the shaft nut can solve the problem as long as it hasn't been happening to long.

Thanks again guys i had both checked, the shaft nut and the valve body, it was the shaft nut.

But now i have a new problem, when i go from drive to reverse, it goes forward for a bit then slams into revese. The mechanic said it was the park/neutral switch on the side of the trans, and it would be expensive.

he right or ??

once again, any and all help would be greatly appreciated !!!

Still sounds like a shaft nut or valve body problem.
