I know this isn't a new topic and I have read thru previous posts. My son
lives in Honolulu and is having trouble with his 1995 Saturn SL2 overheating
= pretty typical:When he is moving along (over 30 mph) there is no ptoblem,
needle stays on 1/4....if he gets stuck in traffic it starts to go up. By turning
on the heat, it stays down. His water blows all at once, sometimes when he
stops. If he doesn't have any problems the water is at the same level next
time he drives it.From reading posts I was planning on purchasing a
thermostat and PCM valve before I go over to visit him next week - Am I on
the right track?? I really appreciate help - also would it be worth it to
purchase an online engine diagram? Thanks so much!!Edited by: Carrier999

The coolant temp sensor is most likely reading low and not turning on the fan. There are two on this model one for the pcm and one for the gauge. They are located on the cylinder head sort of between the battery and engine you want the one that is lower with two wires going to it check that the connector does not have corrosion the sensor can crack and leak into the connector. Of course that is if the fan itself is ok.

What exactly is the temerature reading when it "overheats"? Does the fan turn on when the gauge gets to the 3/4 to red mark?

I purchased a Coolant Temp Sensor and a thermostat to take with me, so I
will start there. I don't know what the temp reading is when it overheats or
if the fan comes on at all but will find out - Thanks!
