Default cruise control Trouble ????

2009 Vue AWD

When using the cruise control in hilly conditions:

I always set the cruise control on a flat part of the road. When the Vue is on a incline the RPM's will increase to maintain speed (that is what I would excepted from any engine).

BUT, on a DECLINE the RPM's will jump up as if the vechile needed power to maintain its speed!

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Does it downshift when you go downhill? Or does it have a CVT?

1.) Hate to seem nieve, but what is a CVT?

2.) At this time I cannot tell. Whenever going downhill and the TACH reaches 3500 I disengage the cruise control by tapping on the brakes.

I spoke to the dealer and they say that the vechile seems to be running as designed.

I'll try to explain this in non-technical terms, so kindly put up with me for a moment:

When the automatic transmission reaches highway cruising speed, it "locks" the torque converter, thereby lessing the power loss through the transmission, and improving gas mileage. When you go up a hill, and more load is placed on the engine, the converter "unlocks" and your engine speed jumps up a bit to maintain a constant speed.

When going downhill, this locking action helps keep the car at a constant speed. The throttle closes a bit, and the engine acts as a stabilizer to keep the speed at the set point. If this locking system doesn't work, the engine will speed up, trying to engage the passing gear ... at least, that was what was happening on my wife's car. New transmission system fixed it (although I had to raise a bit of a fuss with the regional factory representative)

+1 warranty issue.

Return to dealer and indicate vehicle speeding up on its own when on cruise control is a safety issue. Make service rep ride with you. Be persistent.

After a long conversation with a saturn rep. and rereading the owners manual, the cruise control is functioning properly. It is set up to downshift when going downhill to try to maintain the speed set on the cruise control.

Thanks for all of your suggestions,

Tim
