This is 100% correct in my case, except my original (failed) ECT sensor was the brass-tipped version! Put a new one in (looked the same as the one that came out) and all is well now. The needle on the coolant temp gauge was smooth, it just never got to the right temperature, likely causing the rich condition you described. Good diagnosis doc!
EDIT: I didn''t replace the connector, it was clean and corrosion free inside and seems to work fine. The dealer wanted TWICE the ECT sensor price just for the connector!Edited by: superspeeder

You are right, the new connector is double the cost of the sensor. I guess they are proud of their part, but you have to pay the piper ... I have never found the connector in the after market
