That is a fairly common problem with S series cars. It should still lock in the lock position after you remove the key. It is caused by the combination of a worn key, and a worn cylinder. Getting a new key cut from the VIN (as opposed to duplicating the worn key) might cure the problem temporarily.

my '02 sc2 does the same thing.. I got freaked out due to my key was on a landard and i moved my leg and the key came out.. I got a copy of that key made and shockingly it didn't come out...
**Question** does you key fight you/hard for it to turn into start?

My '95 SC2 did this as well. Didn't think much of it until I went to turn the engine off one day and the key turned just passed the ACC position and stopped. Guess the whole ignition lock cylinder ceased as it was so worn out. Luckily it decided to happen as I was stopping to buy oil at my local auto parts store and they carried my models lock cylinder.
