This is a heads up!

Hearts mostly, Mandee. LMAO I did tell a gorgeous young lady today that I thought she was a beautiful young woman and that I'm sure she'll do well as she goes through life. My wife agreed and the young lady was truly grateful to here someone tell her that. I tried to get my son to talk to her, but he's very shy.

5.5# should be fine,Unc. The fuel pump should have a shutoff in it that keeps the pressure consistent.
When you run the car, do you smell gas? I wonder if another potential problem might be a stuck float in the carb. You could check this without the car running by pulling the air cleaner, running the fuel pump to pressurize the system, and looking in at the carb to see if gas is coming out the air horn.
Still scratching my head on this one-my experience has been that if the engine is popping on the exhaust side, it means that the timing is way retarded. I agree with Charlie that the distributor may be a culprit.
Hey, I learned something new here- Charlie's nickname is Ruby!

After verifying through a compression check that there were no valves hanging open causing weird things to take place, and keeping in mind the symptoms remained through two carburetors, one of which I think was o.k. and I am comfortable with and one of which I had carefully rebuilt and was comfortable that it was rebuilt well, I reduced the fuel pressure and low and behold the back firing quit. This is leading me to believe at least at the moment, fuel pressure was holding the float needle opening causing the car to run rich and thus missfiring. When it miss fired raw gas ended up in the exhaust system light it off.
A sort of quick check of the distributor says dwell is staying constant so I don't see a problem with side play etc of the cam or rotor.
So shortly I will pick up a new cap and jump another tooth on the drive. I have reached a physical limit as to adjusting timing so by re-indexing it one more tooth I can move the physical adjustment limit. Things are beginning to steady down now. Time will tell.

There is a whole bunch of truth in that one. Most importantly when you are trying to do things on a budget that is too small and on top of that I am making mistakes to boot. It's gets muddy as to where the problems lie.
