Default My father died yesterday

Hey folks,

After suffering with Alzheimer's for 7 years, my father passed away yesterday from a lug infection. The infection only lasted 4 days before he passed so the suffering from that was minimal. He was 84.

The suffering from Alzheimer's -- both for my dad and the family -- was a nasty thing. My dad stopped recognizing me last month , yet two days before he passed he told me he loved me. He hadn't been lucid in well over a month. But I'll take it.

Hope you don't mind me posting it here -- you guys are part of my family at this point.

Not sure how much I'll be on the board for a while but I'll be back....

I'm very sorry to hear that Derf. My Dad also suffered from Alzheimer's. For some reason he would recognize me more than my other 6 siblings. I guess it's because I visited more often. Your Dad is in a much better place and is also healthy and happy now. I wasn't supposed to survive back in 04 due to complications from brain surgery, but I did. During that dark 6 months, I saw my Dad, my father-in-law and other relatives that has crossed over years ago. The other side is a great place and nothing to fear. Be sure that your Dad will always be around you, too. Mine still answers mechanical questions for me from time to time. I'll get stuck working on a car, put my tools down, go in the house and sit down and get quiet and say, "Okay, Dad, what would you do here?" Most of the time, I have a solution come to me within an hour or less. I'm sure it's my Dad telling me.

Condolences Derf,
No words can really cover your loss. My dad died at 62 as a result of a heart attack that medicine at the time could not address and I never got a chance to say goodby. My mom many years later from Alzheimer's and she lived in her own word for 15 years or so after sharing it in part with us but lost and frustrated with where she was. But at least one day I got a chance to say goodby. When she was visiting for a moment in the world I lived in. An awful disease that leaves the person affected to live some where else and those of us around hopelessly incapable of knowing how to understand things.
My thoughts reach out towards you.

Thanks for your support , guys. It means alot to me.

Funeral was yesterday. Weather was nice as far as Philly weather goes.
A merciful end to 7 long years of the mental torture that is Alzheimers. Unc, your sentiments ring so true. I could not have stated it any better.

He lived in a world all his own, with occasional and brief returns to ours.

He is finally at peace.
