Okay so i have owned my sc2 since may, I love this car. I am 18 and bought it the week of my bday so i am paying the price in intrest... all that is besides the point. I AM SCREWED UNLESS YOU KNOW SOMETHING. i still owe about 4.5gs and i bought it without a warranty. as of 5 days ago my car started acting up. started randomly dying... all fluids are good and stuff. I took it to the local mech. and he hooked it up to diagnostics and said he hasnt seen a diagnostic result like that before. 13 codes came up and 5 are U codes... (greek to me, all i know is that is really really bad). He also said he has no idea what it could be, the sensors are all messed up and some other junk he said about the communications in the car... He has no idea and is telling me it would take days and days to even narrow it down, im 18 and live on my own. I cant afford that kind of bill on top of my car payment...

i need to know if anyone out there has any idea or have heard of this kind of thing happen. I am totally screwed any info to lead me in a good direction would be greatly appriciated. Thanks to all.

Is your service engine soon (SES) light on?

Get the codes (ALL of them-- be sure you do not transpose numbers) from your "mechanic" and we will try to sort it out.

U codes are related to the "communications network" between different subsytems which control various aspects of your vehicle. Let's deal with the U codes first.

Breathe deep/post codes. If he won't give up the codes, take car to Autozone/similar--they will read them for FREE.

And get your vehicle away from the mechanic who says "it'll take days and
days" to sort out b/c "he has no idea" -- he's basically saying he
doesn't want to be bothered with any of this---but if you insist, he'll
be happy to charge you out the wazoo while he tries to guess at what
ails your car......

okay a list of codes

p0232 fuel punp feedback

p0326 knock sensor 1 signal out of rang

p1581 cruise direction circuit high

p1599 cc pwr managment mode/eng stall

p1620 low coolant circuit

p1624 pcm ram or snapshot avail

p1626 theft sys fuel enable signal lost

u1000 class 2 serial comm.

u1040 loss of ebcm/ebtcm communications

u1064 loss bcm, ctd, dim, psz / sbm data

u1096 loss ipc communications

u1301 class 2 data high or low volts.

(i know nothing about this stuff, just what the mech gave me. I called 2 saturn shops today they both said it sounds like either a body control module or engine control module. any further ideas)

OK -- I've never troubleshot U codes before, but here is what I've gathered from scavenging the 'net:

1) U1000 means that there is a communications error, but the car's computer doesn't know which module is causing it.

2) U1040 , 1064 and 1096 indicate that the communications problem is
screwing up communications to/between the modules listed in these codes.
However, it may not be these modules that are the problem -- the
ROOT of the problem may be the wiring that connects them
together and allows them to communicate.

3)
U1301 (class 2 data high or low volts) is telling you that somewhere in
the communications system, the connection that carries the
communications between the modules (serial data) is either shorted to
ground or shourted to battery voltage. In other words, the
communications signals are sent as a series of high and low pulses;
this error code means that for this subsection of the communications
network, there is a short to ground or a short to battery voltage that
is pinning the signal on this line to either "high" (battery voltage)
or "low" (ground).
You can figure out which is the case by
hooking a voltage meter to PIN 2 of the DLC (Diagnostic Link Connector)
located down and left of the steering wheel -- low on the dash actually
usually where the dash stops.....connect the red lead of the voltmeter
to pin 2 and the black lead (ground) to DLC ground (pin 5 on the DLC).
If it reads close to 12 V then there is a short to battery voltage; if
it reads 0V, there is a short to ground on the communications line.

Then
again, one of the listed modules may have bitten the dust and fried
internally---resulting in a short to ground or a short to battery
voltage.

The only way to find out is to disconnect the modules listed in U1040 , 1064 and 1096 one at a time</span> until the U1301 goes away (means you've removed the short from the system). This should identify the bad module.

Based
on the codes, the dealer's first guesses are probably right on -- bcm
(body control module), ecbm (electronic brake control module)-- but be
sure they check the WIRING first -- it could be a simple wiring issue
between the modules, as opposed to an internal issue with either of the
modules.

I would reccommend taking this to a Saturn Dealer --
they will likely be the only ones with a wiring diagram of the
communications system (GM shop manual for your car) Also -- be sure you
bring this list of codes with you and that you make it clear that you
know where the initial issue lies -- in th ecommunications. This
should help curb any ideas they may have about replacing all the
sensors listed in the P codes (if they are dishonest) (again, IGNORE P
codes until the U Codes are gone -- then see what's left for P codes).

NOTE:
none of these U codes point to the PCM (powertrain control module), so
if anyone tries to replace that right off, they're probably dicking you.

In summary-- be SURE to ask the TECH who works on your car for
1)
a DETAILED explanation of what the communications issues are 2)
whether the U1301 is a short to battery or a short to ground
3) where the wiring problem is
4) which module they found associated with the short (if it wasn't the wiring BEFORE THEY REPLACE ANYTHING. This is your right as the customer. DO NOT GIVE THEM CARTE BLANCHE to "do whatever it takes".

Once
you demonstrate that you understand exactly how they're SUPPOSED to
troubleshoot the problem, it becomes much more difficult for them to
snow you if they are unscrupulous.

Knowledge is Power.

Jeffroe18,
Sounds like main harness connectors and or at the pcm. Could be a simple stupid ground loss .engineer out the problems don`t get overwhelmed by overcomplicated conversation.theres a saying KISS keep it simple stupid.

ODBII was designed to assist in the diagnosis of
such problems that may otherwise take needless hours of trial and error to track down. If the system can tell you what it thinks is wrong, why
not let it guide you?

How is that overcomplicated?

I'm just pointing out the info is out there and explaining the details...

Peace Out
