Well we a 2001 Saturn SC1 5 speed with 104,000 miles and owned it sence new, and had a 100,000 mile warranty so only lately have been dooing maintnece myself! WOW fun! Trans just went out (no did not do that my self tahnk god), and other that that has been a great little car!

When warm it idels high like 1,900 RPM and pops which my mechanic told me was a miss in cylinder 1. changed plugs and wires thinking that was it, but no change. I see that you guys recomend the ECTS allot. Where is this sensor located? any pictures? OTHER SUGESTIONS!

Thanks
Chris

ECTS is a two wire sensor located in the back of the cylinder head.

Find the EGR valve and look down.

It has a squeeze connector on it -- squeeze to release---do not pry.

Other ideas:

1) 1900 RPM? Sounds like vacuum leak --spray throttle body cleaner around intake manifold gasket and throttle body while running -- rpms change --> found the leak.

Service Engine Soon light on? Codes?

2) Popping? -- do you mean misfiring or backfiring? Sounds like the latter. (???) Does it ever idle smoothly? What makes it "pop"?

well ects would cause problems over all 4 cyl. its a dis coil pack that uses waste spark. so if you are going to have a problem with one cyl. its companion cyl would be affected. that is if it were the coil.

a safer alternative to using tb cleaner is to spray a little propane in the intake. if the popping stops and the engine smoothes out you'de have yourself a fuelproblem. you can also use that to find a leak.

but first things first, check all vacuum lines, and make sure they are all in the proper locations!

I am having the identical issues, replaced the egr, no help. Did you ever find the cause of the problem?

it will be the intake manifold gasket shifts and causes a vacum leak at cyl#1 and causes a misfire and a high idle a p0301 and a p0507, spray carb or brake clean at #1 cyl and at to intake and car will lisfire or stall
