Gas Mileage.
#4
I drive a 94 saturn S-series.(automatic trans) It is basicly the same car (engine) as yours. In its prime I was getting 36-38 miles per gallon. These days it is closer to 30-33 miles per gallon. Unless the manufacturer has made changes, the "S- Series" cars have a 12.5 gallon fuel tank. So then, at 30mpg for 12.5 gal : 375 miles per tank. I would imagine if you drive easy on the pedal you could do better than that. I think a '99 "S-CAR" should be getting very close to 400 miles per tank of fuel. BTW: 400 mpg translates to 644 kpg. If you are not getting at least close to 600 kpg per every 47.3 liters of fuel, you may have a problem.
Fuel consumption that is as far off as you suggest would usually mean some kind of fuel system leak. I would double check the numbers so that you know for sure what kind of fuel mileage your car is getting.
The correct method to determine Miles Per Gallon is as follows (I wrote this in as simple as I could, so everyone can understand; I hope no-one is offended.):
Drive your car until you are just about out of fuel. Then, At your favorite Gas Station, fill your fuel tank up all the way-make sure it is full. Reset your "trip meter" on the car dash board/Instrument panel to "0000". Next, drive your car normally, try not to let it idle for long periods, and try not to "floor it" from every stop light. (basically- Drive like an old lady.)
Continue to drive until the fuel tank is just about empty. Return to your favorite gas staion, and fill up-all the way. Write down how many gallons/Liters of fuel it took to fill up. The write down how many miles your car "trip meter" reads. Divide the Miles by the fuel. For example: If the Trip-Meter reads 390 miles. And The Gas stations fuel pump Reads:11.75 then your equation should look something like this: 390 divided by 11.75 = 33.19 . In this case the cer is getting 33.19 miles per gallon. I hope this is helpfull to you.
There is no One thing that will improve your fuel economy. Infact, to make a noticable improvment, it consists of alot of little things. I.e. clean air filters, proper tire pressure, drive at a slower more consistant speed, make sure your front end is it proper alignment, cut down on the amount of weight inside your vehicle...if any one any more I would like to know....
