idling at 1500 rpms!!!!

I recently have noticed my 2000 saturn sc2 has been idling around 1500 rpms for long periods of time. and now at some points it idles at 500 rpms but then dies. any ideas of whats wrong?

Do you get a check engine light. My first thought would be the IAC motor. But it could be one of many things like an air leak

Yeah, check the IAC and for vacuum leaks.

no there is no check engine light..i dont mean to sound like a dumbass but what is an IAC motor?? and how can i check for air leaks?

IAC stands for Idle Air Control. Its located on the side of the throttle body. A picture of its location is below.

Theres not very many vacuum lines on these cars, so checking for leaks is pretty simple. Just inspect all the lines for cracks.
