Hello felllow Saturn owners. first let me say ,awesome site you have here ,Hi my name is RussI recentlybought a 2000 SC2 afor my son , as luck should have it the tranny packed it in, I have read some real horror stories on the net about the "TAAT" automatic transmission , anyhow my question is this , I found a used tranny at a local wreckers for $450.00 , but the real killer is every place I go wants $1000.00 to switch it out , I am told they have to drop the entire sub frame to do so , what I really need to know can I pull everyting from the top including motor?, I am an old school kinda mechanic and have never changed a front wheel drive tranny ,and I do not have a hoist to be able to drop the frame (I have every other tool you can think of lol)ifanyone can help me here , that would be super fantastic.

You can pull the entire assembly out through the top. Its pretty easy to do. I've done it countless times. As long as you have an engine puller with a load leveler, it should be a breeze. If you dont own one, one can usually be rented from a equipment rental store.
You can also do it by dropping the engine cradle too. You just need to support the engine from the top. This can easily be done as well with a couple 2x4's layed across the engine bay. I rarely do it this way since I can get the engine through the top in a couple hours and still retain the allignment of the suspension.

it's not difficult to drop the cradle and swap the gearbox. i just pulled mine a month or so ago to change the clutch.
you'll need to make a brace sorta like this:
which will support the engine while you take this out:
time consuming and awkward, but not real difficult. good luck!
