Default Change Oil notification

Is this notification set off by mileage or your actual oil being low?

Reason I ask, mine went off the other day and it is about time to get an oil change but I was trying to hold off until the weekend when I have time instead of going on a lunch break.

Thanks!

Read owners manual
I'm guessing it says change oil
I'm guessing it does not say oil low
I'm guessing it does not say add oil
Check your oil, then you'll know if it's low.

No matter what your doing ... no matter where you are, no matter the weather. When that light comes on ... you must stop drop, and change the oil on the spot.

ROFLMFAO!!

I keep track of my oil change in my Equinox by writing it down in a notebook. I do that with every car I've ever owned. I don't know if your Saturn is like my Chevy, but every once in a while, my oil change light comes on. When it does, I just reset it by turning the key on and stepping on the gas pedal three times quickly. Then I go about my business. I know when my oil needs changed. I run Mobil One synthetic and change it every 7,500 miles. That may be over kill to some, but it's just the way I am. I've been told I could go 15,000 miles between changes, but I won't.

i go 3k religiously with high mile oil in a car that has 102k miles then change it, oil filter i go 6-9k depending on if it was a lot of highway miles or in town miles...i only go 3k because in the 3 months or so it takes to go that far, i need more bar oil for my chain saw.

If you don't want to change both at the same time for what ever freaking reason, do it the other way around because the filter gets dirty first because it filters out the dirty.

mobil 1 synth 3-5K

oil change light is triggered by some cryptic yet insanely accurate algorithm developed by sw2cam's uncle sw1cam.
It takes into account

  • mileage
  • engine temp
  • rpm
I THINK.

or there is a tiny dude in the oil pan monitoring the oil health by tasting it for contaminants. He's the dude with his finger on the oil change light.

You really change the Mobil One every 3-5000 miles, Derf?
