My 1998 standard trans. s-series is idleing high in gear and out of gear (up to 2100 RPM's) It also hesitates when trying to accelerate. this happens mostly at beginning of gear change when RPM's are low.It feels like it's missing. I have not taken it any where and it is my families primary car. I am tight this month so any advice would help.

Saturn...best car I have ever owned!

Well, I have have no idea how familiar with cars you are, so I'll start with the basic suggestions. If you feel like it's missing check all of the plug wires and make sure the boots are tight on the plug. With some cars i've driven the air cleaner was so dirty that the car actually felt like it was lagging real bad, so mayble checking the air filter isn't a bad idea. My last suggestion is to double check the vacuum hoses since the car will run like crap if these aren't connected. There's many other possibilities, but i hope this helps!

High idle on S car engines is most often attributible to either a bad ECTS + connector (Engine coolant temp sensor), a vacuum leak, or just a filthy sticking throttle body.

Start with throttle body cleaning. When done, spray throttle body cleaner around all vacuum connections, and especially at the the intake manifold gasket and the throttle body connection. If rpms change, you've found your leak.

If problem persists, I would replace ECTS and connector (connector is Saturn only part).

Keep us posted
