Guess my luck finally ran out at 189,000 miles. My catalytic converter had been rattling like it had a wrench flopping around inside for about 2 years and then the noise stopped about 3 weeks ago. I noticed that my mileage dropped from 33+ mpg down to 20+ mpg. I have heard that the internal part that came loose could finally jamb itself sideways and restrictthe converter outlet and reduce gas mileage. Has anyone else had this happen or heard of this? BTW, the new plug and play (no welding or clamping)$896converter(dealer cost) is on order from AutoZone for $126.

F.Y.I.

Photo ofa plugged catalytic converter and the plug removed. And yes, a plugged converter does decrease gas mileage.

Enjoy!
