1992 SL1 transmission
#1
My 1992 SL1 recently developed a transmission problem as follows:
When shifted into "D" the car moves but it never upshifts and stays in a low gear, but if I start it rolling with shift in "3rd", the transmission shifts normally (up/down) moving through the gears and then if placed into "D" it upshifts and downshifts normally as long as the car doesn''''t stop rolling.
This happened right after I took it to a shop to have fixed a problem where the starter wouldn''''t turn on unless I shake the shifter. Could be these things are related to each other?
The shop told me it needs a new transmission quoted at $1,550.
Ideas? Suggestions?
Thanks

Sounds like the shop that worked on your car screwed it up.
The original problem was a simple fix. There is a shift interlock solenoit on the shifter that doesnt allow it to shif out of Park unless the brake is press and the key is in the ignition. Replacement of the cable or detaching it from the shifter assembly is all that was needed. And wouldnt of effected shifting at all.
It sounds like now they screwed up the shift cable, misaligned it or the shift selector on the transmission. If your transmission wasnt having shifting issues before, then its not an internal problem with the transmission.
And $1500 isnt the price of a new transmission. $1550 is the price of a used transmission that has been marked up $1475.
