hey guys i dont knwo much about saturns, yet. but i just bought my buddys saturn off of him. He basically beat the thing up but its only got 85,000 mile son it. the engine is making a loud *** noise from the valve cover like there is a loose rocker smacking the valve cover or something like that. it definetly isnt in the valve train it is in the head for sure. Any ideas or any one run into this same porblem???

How is it that it isnt in the valvetrain but is in the head... that doesn't make any sense. Anyway, if you think it's the rockers making noise, take off the cover and check for obvious signs of contact. Edited by: S-Turn

sorry man i meant in the lower end of the engine io dont think there is a problem. What should i look for when i pull the valve cover off??? I think its a losse rocker or lifter? not sure. I havent had much experience with ahnds on engines. My dad is taking it apart with me, but i am just trying to figure out extra info on when me and him take the valve cover off would i literally be able to move the loose parts with ym hand. so basically what should i be moving around to see whats loose??? thanks i hope that makes sence. let me know whats up

If it's a "ticking" sound that you hear that is often associated with a "sticky" lifter. The lifter is sticking and getting slapped by the cam, instead of riding up and down in a fluid motion.

I know on a pushrod engine the rockers can be moved by hand if the cam is in the right position, and the are set to a certainvalve lash (space between the rocker and stem of the valve). I honestly don't know if there is going to be any play between the valve and rocker on an overhead cam motor. IF there is you should be able to get a feeler Gage an check the clearances of the rockers as you rotate the engine by hand.

I'd recommend getting a Saturn Haynes manualEdited by: S-Turn

have u found any aftermarket cams? just curious because there isn't really much out there for the 1.9L SOHC.

The lifter might be scored on the sides. Debris, sh*tty oil, orno oil on start-upmight have worn the lifters.
