I just cleaned my EGR valve this weekend as well as replaced the sparkplugs in my 1995 SL with 176,000 miles.

There is alot of oil on and around the plugs. I know I proabably need to replace the valve cover gasket, but is there anywhere else on the SOHC engine where this leak could be coming from?

I am interested in reducing oil consumption as much as possible since I burn/loose about 1 qt. every 200 miles. Otherwise the car is quite relaiable and now runs pretty good since the new plugs were installed and the EGR valve unstopped. Thanks!

There are alot of places that an oil leak can come from. But if your car is burning oil (seeing smoke from exhaust every now and again) then that would most likely have to do with the valve stem seals wearing.

Other places you can get leaks is the oil pan gasket and the valve cover gasket. If you have oil in the spark plug holes then you definetly need to replace the valve cover gasket because that is definetly where its comming from. Its incredibly easy to do and only took me about 1/2 hour

Thanks! That is what I needed to know. Any internals I am not even going to mess with fixing; I'll just replace the engine when the time comes. But the little and easy fixes (i.e. valve cover gasket) are definately worth the trouble. I also think my rear main seal is leaking, but I am also not too concerned considering the somewhat immenent need for a engine replacement. Do you have any experience/advice regarding the rear main seal repair additives? I appreciate your time!
