1996 Saturn SL Over heating while idling

What do you mean by it's not healthy looking? Do you have water bubbles on the oil dipstick? Maybe the coolant has never been changed. I'd recommend a flush of the cooling system and a fresh refill with a 50/50 blend of antifreeze and distilled water.

After checking the water pump for signs of leaking. After checking top drivers side of radiator on the engine side for swelling or cracking. Flush and refill .............. replace pressure cap.
If at one time someone replaced the ETCS with one from AdvanceO'ReillyZone you could very well be getting an incorrect temp reading at the guage, that also means your getting an incorrect signal being sent to the PCM.

I plan on flushing it first thing in the morning, and by not healthy looking I mean it is brownish, and no I don't have a compression gage... today I turned the ac on so the fan would stay on and the temp. stayed right around the 3/8 mark like usual... Thanks for all the help you all have provided.

I hope you don't use any chemical flushes. If you flush, just use plane water, however, I would just drain and refill with fresh coolant at a 2:1 concentration with distilled or purified water, or use premix.
