Exclamation 1998 Saturn SL....Transmission question

I have a 1998 Saturn SL. The problem is that when i drive to school i have to go up hills on the highway and my car doesnt changed gears easily. And when it does it makes a banging noise and my check engine comes on. I have had a lot of problems with my car and since I live in Puerto Rico it hasnt been the best experience fixing it since they do not sell these cars here. I do not want to get rid of it because I have put so much money into it and I cant afford another car until after college. What can be the problem. The 3rd shift doesnt work and on the 2nd shift it gets stuck and when I have it drive it doesnt want to pick up?

get the codes read for the Service Engine Soon light and post them here -- the actual codes, not just their descriptions.

Likely there are codes relating to your transmission.

We will try to help you from there.

Is the transmission fluid level full?
