Default 92 SL2 has idle issues on stopping

The problem I'm having is with a 1992 SL2 automatic with 113k miles. It runs ok most of the time; the issue I'm having occurs when I'm at a stop sign or a similar situation. If I'm at a full stop, then I let off the brake and give it a little gas, then hit the break again, the RPMs drop really low and will kill the car sometimes. This only happens when the car is in drive, though. I can't reproduce it when it's in park.

I'm guessing it's the EGR, but I'm not really sure, and I don't want to drop $90 into it without ruling out other (read, cheaper) options.

Is there an easy way to test to see if it's the EGR or something else?

First option would be to wait at the light an extra second or so, that way you won't have to slam on the brakes as some idiot runs the light. If that's not an option, have someone read the codes off the computer and see if an EGR problem shows up ...

Or just pull the EGR and clean it with choke cleaner or carb cleaner until the pintle moves freely. Be sure to clean the two ports where it connects. I believe the early S car EGRs were vacuum operated, so you may wish to check the vac line to the EGR solenoid for damage.

Cost to clean: $5 /20 min
