Just checked the plugs in my wifes SL2 and found the #2,3 combustion chambers full of oil, spark plugs were dripping when I pulled them out.

Is this something I might be able to fix without removing the engine?

It has been smoking for sometime now, but this looks pretty bad, only 110k miles on it too.

If you know what I am up against I could sure use a few suggestions, I am totally ready to fix this thing.

thanks

1) Oil control rings are likely seized in place on the pistons and are not sweeping the cylinder walls. This allows excessive oil to enter the cyls from below.

2) Also likely that valve seals and valve guide seals are gone, allowing oil to seep into the combustion chamber.

If you're smoking then you are burning about 3-5 qts/3K mi, yes?

Compression is probably pretty low too.....(have you checked it)?

Rebuild is on the horizon -- only makes sense for you if you're gonna do it yourself (14 yr old car...)

If you do decide to do it yourself:

A) do the entire job while you're at it -- top, bottom, and timing chain
