94 saturn SL1 starting/fuel problem
#1
well it seems that i'm stumped on my what's wrong with my car
so here's the symptoms:
when starting cold i have to hold the gas down and pump it for it to start, even then it will occasionally stall till it gets warm
i calculated my fuel mileage the other day at 25 mpg which is about 5-10 less than i should get
Recent work:
new plugs, oil, oil filter, exhaust, radiator, temperature sensor
Problems with recent work:the cooling fan wouldn't kick on, tried replacing the sensor but it didn't help, did all troubleshooting in the book with no success. ultimately just ran the system from computer 5v in to the sensor straight to the relay which seems to work to kick the fan on when it's hot.the current problem seemed to happen shortly after this work so i suspect it had something to do with it, computer was pulled out temporarily during work which i understand shouldn't have done any damage just clear codes in it.tried undoing the work to see if it would fix it, but the problem persisted
please help, i'm out of ideas
cheers

Did you replace the correct temperature sensor? Theres two. One sends engine temperature to the gauge, the other send engine temperature to the PCM to control how the engine runs and to activate the fen when needed.
Sounds like you replaced the incorrect sensor or the connector to the sensor is damaged.

hmmm, we've replaced a sensor that did indeed go back to the PCM,but it didn't help with the problem.
We ultimately took the computer out of the system which made the fan work, but if it controls how the engine runs that would make a lot of sense.
i'll hook that sensor back up to the PCM to see if it runs correctly again (ignoring the fan). if it does i'll get a hold of the other sensor and see if it's busted
thanks, i'll post my results in a couple of days
cheers

perhaps there was no problem then, once i hook it up i'll run it idle till it hits red
