hi everyone.i have a 1996 Saturn SL2 Automatic, 112,000 Miles. At about 111,900 when i put it into reverse, it would not shift...but when i rev up to 4,5,6 RPM only then would the car begin to reverse...very slowly...sometimes it would make a grinding sound. From 1st to 2nd gear change..it would jump a bit hard then its a smooth ride after that. I hope my transmission is not dying on me...ive checked the transmission fluid and its good. Any ideas on what is going on? Ive had a few people tell me to change my transmission filter under the car.. but thought id check in here first before i do anything. Thanks! hope someone can help me.

If it was juat a reverse problem, you could remove the end cover and tirque down the shaft nut. But since you are having problems in forward gears as well, sounds like the valve body needs replacement.

Frequent fluid and filter changes along with an external cooler helps elliminate these kinds of problems. The manual recommends a 30,000 mile interval between changes. I do it every 8,000 to 10,000 miles. Unfortunatly its too late for your transmission.

You could always swap in a manual transmission.
