96 sl2 engine interchangable with what years?
#13
96 is indeed odb II and 95 ODB I. 95 was 1st year for non-vacuum EGR so you're ok there. ODB II has 2 O2 sensors -- manifold and post cat -- so you are covered there -- you just wouldn't plug in the post cat 02 (but keep it in the bung).
95 was last year for 2 coolant temp sensors -- one for the PCM and one for the dash temp gauge. Not sure if signal to PCM coolant temp sensors would get hosed by having gauge hanging off it too (since they did that for 96 on, doubt it is an issue)

It's a 95 motor going into a 96 car. You will reuse the 96 exhaust. The OBDII system is already in the car. The sensors are all the same. The plugs are all the same. I've done it many times both ways because those were the years of the porous heads (oil in the water). It's a little more difficult putting a 96/97 into a 95- only because you have to drill and tap the head for the extra ECTS.When you have both engines out ,you can compare them side by side and remove anything from the 96 eng and install it on the 95 if it doesn't look right. I'm pretty sure the 95 engines were consistant throughout the model year.
