97 SL1 starts hard sometimes. The engine cranks and doesn''t turn over right away. This happens occasionally, not all the time. Just bought the car used, has 96K miles. Does anyone know what this could be?

could be anything. I would start with the general maintenance stuff...air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs

Quick question here ... does the hard start condition happen only when the fuel tank level is 1/4 tank or less?

yeah i would imagine it could be the fuel pump, the pump relies on the gasoline to cool it off.

Still working on this problem. Alternator, battery, spark plugs, starter check out fine. Seems to happen only when the tank is filled. Subsides after that, and happens again at the next fill up?????

Are you getting any warning lights?

Could also be the pressure regulator or the EVAP system.

How far do you fill the tank? Until it clicks. Or does it click then you put in more?

Usually when it clicks (stops filling) I give it one more pump and it clicks again and I stop.
