I have a 99 SL2 that will start up, but it only stays on for a sec. The battery and air bag light keep coming on. I replaced the battery but its still doing the same thing. Im guessing its the alternator but I dont wanna start working on it and thats not the problem either. Does anyone know what the problem is?

The problem is ... you need to test things before you replace them.Edited by: sw2cam

Can''t do that because the car wont stay started so I cant take it to get tested.

Did you test the battery when you went to the store to buy a new one?

The car should have run just fine with a fully charged battery untill it went dead, so if you put in a new battery and the car started and died right away ... It''s not the alternator.Edited by: sw2cam

Check the IGN 3 fuses both underneath the hood, and on the instrument panel junction block (I/P JB)inside the car. Also check the IGN 4 fuse under the hood, and the IGN 1 fuse on the I/P JB inside the car.

If all those fuses are good, the possibility of a defective ignition switch arises, but would need toconduct additional tests before making the decision to replace the switch ...
