Brakes

dad,
the link I sent you is for 91-98 drum brakes. 99-02 are apparently slightly different. My bad for not looking up what year your S car was. (Like I said, I hate drum brakes and don't work on them)
I revised my earlier post.
The spring looks like what is pictured as the adjuster spring, not the upper return spring. In your pic, one of the spring ends looks badly distorted. I'd replace them both as it appears they were not staying seated properly.
If still in doubt, pull a drum, take a pic, bring the springs to a Saturn Service dept and they should be able to print out a detailed pic for you or just explain it to you. The guys at my saturn dealership have always been cool about such stuff.

Thanks for your help. I'm going to redo the install today. I bought new hardware so if I can't figure out where the old one goes I will definately document what is going on with lots of pics. Hopefully the saturn service dept is as friendly here in SW Florida. People are a bit more cranky here..... must be too much sun!! I will keep you posted.

i THINK it looks ok. The upper return spring is installed from the back as it should be, and appears to be in the correct orientation. And the adjuster spring also appears to be connected correctly.
Sorry for the confusion -- but as I said -- I'm not a drum brake kinda guy.
If you have ANY doubts, take your vehicle to a Saturn dealer.
