clutch replacement
#1
Hi All,
Has anyone changed a clutch in a 1997 SL2? Are we talking a major league PIA? Any suggestions or helpful hints. I'm asking because my mechanic is quoting me over $1000. I'm pretty mechanically inclined and have done major work on other cars, just not a clutch in a FWD car.
Thanks in advance,
Richard

Hey Richard,
I can't give you any pointers right now. I can tell you I am in the same boat. I have a brand new clutch etc. to put in this weekend. I will let you know how it went. I have a 1998 SL. Wish me luck.

changing the clutch isn't a big job. I'm after changing the transmission a few times on my car. just unbolt it clean from the engine, and the mount above and below the transmission on the left side, and instead of removing the suspension, pop out the ball joint and pull out the side axle. if you can haul the transmission back far enough. you will be able to get at the clutch easier. (may have to remove shift linkage from transmission too)
Hope this helps
