Need some info on a 93 SL1
#1
I bought a wrecked 93 SL1. It runs good, is a 5 speed with power nothing except steering and brakes. No AC. I like it. I have the body all fixed up, looking good, cept for the windshield, I'll take care of that one way or the tuther. I do need help with the check enginelight. I pulled and cleaned the EGR as described in other posts. I read through the sight before signing on. I just ordered a code reader and plan on a Haynes manual tomorrow. I am a retiredUSArmy Infantry Mastergunner. Grew up in a junkyard. I know how to use my hands, just need a wee bit of help with the details. I'm hoping the O2 sensor is the problem that's easy. But I'll be bending y'all ears if it's not.

you can actually read the codes on this model year without a scanner, just get a jumper wire and plug it into the ecm plug under the steering wheel with one end in the positive and one on the negative, doesn't matter which way you plug the wire in, the positive and negative are right next to each other in the plug on the upper right hand corner of the plug. when you plug in the jumper, turn the key forward, but not on, you should hearthecooling fan come on and the flashes will come up on the dash via service engine light. one flash is one,two flashes is two, so on. codes read all in double digits, there are no singledigit codes, and they will repeat as long as the car is on and the jumper is in. you will need to find a listing of the codes and their meanings so you know what's going on. you can probably get them online, if youcan't find them, i can type them up for you and post them here if you need, I don't have them in front of me now otherwise i'd post them now.
I know yousaid you orderedthe code scanner already so this info is a little late.I didn't know this trick until after i got my code scanner!

Alrighty then, I got one code after 12 and it is 23. The Haynes manual doesn't even show a 23. The book that came with the scanner says it is either the Manifold air temperature (MAT) sensor or Throttle postion sensor (TPS) or the Mixture control (M/C) solenoid.
I found the TPS without a problem. The MAT I can only find on the wiring diagram on page 12-16 but, of course that won't tell me where on the engine it is located. I have a funny feeling it is on the bottom of the intake manifold. I can't find any hintof the M/C in the book at all. So I bow to experience and humbly ask:
Where in the heck are the MAT and the M/C?

I believe Code 23 is ATS (Air Temperature Sensor) Sensor Circuit Low (per Chilton).
The ATS is also referred to as the IAT (Intake Air Sensor) -- I believe it is mounted on the air intake tube between the front of the car and the air filter box (before the air filter w/r/t the path that air travels through the intake.

Yup, thankyou derf. The MAT goes by the name of IAT in themanual. I also ran across thislink, which confirmed your imput.
