Exclamation Noise - sounds like crackling, rocks, etc

I have a feeling I know what this issue is, but want to find out what you all think... Over the past few days, I have noticed a noise coming from the front wheel area of my 2002 SL. I think it is coming more from the driver side, but I haven't been able to tell.

The noise only occurs while moving, and does not happen while stopped.

The only way i can describe it is that it sounds like a crackling noise, or rocks in a can moving around..

I am pretty sure it is the bearings, but wanted to see if there was any other insight.

Thanks,
Justin

The sound you are describing sounds more like a catalytic converter rattle,(sometimes caused by a loose heat shield and sometimes internally),which is a fairly common problem on these cars. It could also be brake related since you say it only happens when you are moving. Bearings usually make a roaring sound which is more noticeable at higher speeds.

Gonna have to back up Hoseppi on this one, my catalytic converter came apart and it sounded pretty much as you have described.
I also have changed the front wheel bearing on the S series Saturn and while it would have to be horribly bad to sound as you are describing, just in case it is, if you were to jack up the car and check how tight the front wheel is that should elimnate your concern. If it sounds that bad and is the bearing, the wheel has to be close to falling off.
