Hey everyone, I need some help. I have a 93 SL2 and have recently had some interesting things happen. First off, I was driving down the freeway and the electrical just shut down for a second then popped back on, then went out for another second before coming back fine. After I parked it for about 9 hours (I was in a class) it wouldn''t start. So, I got it home and had the battery and alternator checked (out of the car), the battery was dead but the alternator was fine. It still wouldn''t start so I got the starter out and that was dead as well. It worked fine for about a month, but then I drove about 30 miles, had it parked for a few hours, then drove back 30 miles, I parked again for a couple of minutes, then it wouldn''t start. So I push started it and got it home. After letting it sit in my garage for a couple of weeks, I finally got time to look at it again, the battery was completely dead. I got that switched out and it started right up. Sometimes in the past the car would idle high, but as I drove it to get tested it was almost stalling whenever I took my foot off of the gas. So, I got it tested out and the altenator was putting out 141 amps when in the car, I took the alternator out and it tested fine. What else am I missing? And what should I do next? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks, Eric

I have had similar problems. I had the electrical system wigging out, then it wouldn''''t start. Replaced the battery and it started up just fine, no problems. A couple months later, I''''m having idle problems where it will drop to 100 rpm or stall. Intermittent, so now that I have the car in the shop and they can''''t reproduce the problem and they say my alternator is kosher I''''m not sure what to have them look at.

They say they could go through all the flowcharts for the 26 and 32 codes I''''m throwing but that it''''s usually many many hours to do and probably won''''t get anywhere.

EGR solenoid? Battery cable seems fine, no corrosion.Edited by: bagel

ecpike, check for corrosion on the positive battery cable. Not just on the outside. But the inside too. Bend it back and forth to see if it feels "crunchy" inside.

Could also be the alternator.

Would it be worth it to change the altenator out even though it tested fine out of the car? I''ll check the battery cable but the outside appearance is fine (I''ll have to check for crunchies later today). Is there any other electrical that I should be looking at? (The cable from the starter to alternator is new). What about the other two wires coming out of the alternator, where do they connect?

There should be one wire (fusable link) going from the alternator to the starter. Then a red power cable going from the starter to the battery and underhood fuse box. Then a thin purple wire connects to the starter solenoid.
