I was told my 2001 SL1 has a timing chain rather than a belt. If this is true, how long should I expect the chain to last before replacing it? What''s the avg. cost in labor?

It does have a timing chain. If the car is properly maintained (oil changes every 3000 miles and oil never let to get low) it should last the life of the car. If it has been poorly/moderatly maintained it may last 100,000-120,000 miles.

It''s about $800-$1000 parts and labor to replace it.

I usually charge cost for the timing chain kit plus $250 labor to do a timing chain replacement.
