Hi, Does anybody know the what model of automatic transmission is on the 2002 Saturn SL1?

I am having some trouble with my 2002 saturn right now. When the engine and transmission are cool, everything works fine. After driving for a while, the tranny has difficulty with shifting to the R gear. Sometimes(usually when I do not drive for too long) the shift is delayed for several seconds, and when It does shift to R gear, the car will jerk back slightly. When I drive for a long time, the transmission does not shift to R gear at all.

At first, I did not know that the transmission did not shift, so I steped on the accelerator a littlbe bit, and suddenly the carjerked backwardterribally with great noise, then the car could move backward normally. This happened several times until I realized that the gears might not be shifted.

I have already checked the transmission fluid, and the color looks fine, but just too much fluid.

Please let me know if you have any idea about what caused the problem, and how to fix it. Thanks!

The valvebody is going bad or the output shaft nut has come loose. You do not need a new tranny just someone that knows what they are doing.

Thank you for your reply,SW2CAM.

A possiblestupid question please:

Are there several valves on the transmission? one valve for each shift? If so, does it mean that the valve for R shift go bad?Edited by: pingpang

The "valvebody" is going bad or the "output shaft nut" has come loose. You do not need a new tranny just someone that knows what they are doing.

The tranny is a MP7
