Whats the difference in tranny??

My cousin has a 96 I believe S series. Want to know tranny ID location? Difference in transmission and whats compatible? Junkyard sold him 2000 tranny that bolts up but wont shift gear. Soooo I need some info.

Is his car equipped with a SOHC or DOHC engine?
